We camped at Mary River Road house and drove from there into Gunlom Falls. We had seen the two graders come out of the turn off to Gunlom and so we were hopeful that the rumours that the road was "terrible" would prove to be incorrect. The first half of the road was patchy but OK, the second part that runs parallel to a water course had not been touched and was very rough.
Gunlom had only a little water flowing over the falls. Some people were hanging tentatively around the edge of the plunge pool but no one was swimming - its a croc area. The place to swim is in the pools above the waterfall, at the top of the escarpment - crocs can't get up there. It's a steep, difficult 1km climb up to the top, but the view and the pools are spectacular. Here is Gerd swimming at the top edge of the waterfall ...
There is another small fall at the top of the main fall ...
And a series of pools that you can swim into if you are adventurous enough ....
And beyond that again is the creek, dammed by a rocky outcrop, which is full of small fish.
Gunlom is one of my favourite places.
