25/8/2013 to 29/8/2013 Fossicking at GemTree

25/8/2013 to 29/8/2013 Fossicking at GemTree

We spent the first two days fossicking for garnets.

At the end of each day the caravan park people sorted through our stones and found the “cutters” for us. There is a professional cutter living in the caravan park and (for a fee) he will cut your gems and organises with a wholesale jeweller for them to be set in ear rings, finger rings or necklaces, etc.

We spent the next three days fossicking for zircons. We hired equipment for the first day but we spent the next two days going through the gravel heaps that others had dug and washed and rejected. Whilst we didn’t find the big stones that some fossickers got out of their big deep pits, we were happy with the results from our much less difficult exercise.

Peter’s 5' deep pit from which he got some beautiful stones.

Fossicking in the reject heaps.

At the end of each day we were filthy dirty, tired and hungry. It was a good life. Gerd enjoyed it because he kept finding stones that he liked.  On Friday we had to leave - our food was running low, and we needed to organise our postal vote for the federal elections - but we will come again with our own set of equipment.
