We travelled into Alice Springs. After setting up camp we voted, shopped and then drove around to see the new sun “farms” because Alice is officially a federal Government anointed solar city.
31/8/2013 Alice Springs
Church today, and it turned out to be a high day... All the SDA conference presidents and their wives from around Australia were gathered here for a “retreat”. They told experiences from their local conferences during the church service and then there was a combined lunch with LOTS of food.
After lunch we went out to see John Flynn’s Memorial / Grave site.
At Simpsons Gap we ran into the visiting ministers. They were expressing themselves in song around the water pool in Simpsons Gap to the amazement / enjoyment of other tourists.
We visited Emily Gap and saw a wedding group getting their photos done. At Jessie Gap we got out of the car and were surrounded by bees so we got back in the car and drove away.
We sat on top of the hill at the town lookout and waited as a beautiful sunset unfolded.
1/9/2013 Alice Springs, Trephina Gorge
After house keeping jobs and visiting the Sunday market in the city centre, we headed out to Trephina Gorge.
The eastern MacD Ranges are quite spectacular for their ruggedness.
It is a beautiful drive out to Trephina Gorge. We did the rim walk and took some photos but as we headed down into the gorge a bank of clouds filled the sky and pulled a lot of the colour out of the scenery. It was disappointing.
Next we drove the rough 4WD drive track to the John Hayes Rockhole. Because it was dry we were able to walk into the back area beneath the dry waterfall which we had not been able to do previously.
On the way home Gerd spotted a LARGE goanna ambling across the road so we stopped and I added him to my “big game” trophy photos.
